Sicario, Love Jones, The Accountant, Glengarry Glen Ross and The Invisible Man
What happens when your life becomes public in a way you never expected or could have anticipated? Then the movies Sicario, Love Jones, The Accountant, Glengarry Glen Ross and the book the Invisible Man become central to your story.
I experienced a psychosis in 2004 that became very public at least to me in 2023 and 2024. It was a very hard thing to process. It caused my emotions to be unleashed in a way I could have never anticipated. And unleash a dialogue that I could never have anticipated as well. I missed parts of my life that I had before and began to have a hard time processing all of the attention. I felt like one of the most important people on the planet but didn’t know how to get back to a life that included something approaching any type of normal.
Someone knew the contents of conversations I had in private and people began calling me out of the blue. Trying to help me sometimes. Other times trying to discredit me it seemed. And I was so angry that my life had been turned upside down every which way you could possibly imagine. And I wanted to apportion blame to those that drove it. But it became harder to figure out who that was.
I remember I was listening to music on YouTube and the song Sunflower came in my feed and I associated it with the woman who I called Amy in my book Blue Eye Soul. I had given her sunflowers at one point. The person sending the message would have thought it was beautiful, and it was that she would try to send me a message that my story mattered to her. Come to think of it, it wasn’t just my story. It was our story or the story of our interactions. But it was too painful to me at the time. It had been so private for so long. Hardly any one read my book when it was first published. And the fact that it was being done in this way made it really hard to process emotionally. If I remember correctly I turned to another series of songs because I couldn’t deal with it at the time.
There were times when on this journey when I was trying so hard to follow signs and symbols until I just couldn’t bring myself to do it anymore. I have begun to apologize for how I felt when I didn’t follow the signals. I feel that I am being punished for not doing so in some ways.
The way that this has been done and my financial circumstances have unmoored me emotionally. Particularly for the things that defined me before all of this started. My job, being a parent, my friends. Those things defined my emotional maturity in a way. And everyone wanted me to start a new family, forget about my old life, start a new completely different life. They kept on showing me women much younger than me, ostensibly to have kids with. I had been comfortable with my two daughters and wasn’t looking to have more kids before this all started. I even debated getting a vasectomy but ruled it out just in case I met a woman much younger that wanted kids. But I wasn’t pursuing it. I had raised two daughters and that was an important part of my emotional mooring.
There are a few important stages of grief that I went through a number of times. Denial and bargaining were two of the prominent. I was trying to reconcile my feelings for my children and my sister and feelings of abandonment and anger at their approach to me. At times I wanted answers and that there could be a reconciliation and bargaining with the forces that drove this process to have some semblance of my old life back. And I attributed their outrageous behavior to me to a persecution I felt I was going through. And the forces behind that persecution. And this put me at the nexus of a thing called betrayal blindness.
Betrayal blindness is a process where when you have been harmed by someone and you ignore the harm or harmful behavior in plane sight and focus on the good parts of your relationship with them. You ignore the harmful behavior even when directed specifically at you. You have a lack of sight or blindness that allows your mind to process the hurt. It’s a coping mechanism you might call it a defense if you will. And it occurs in small and sometimes large ways with significant harms, like kidnapping to name one instance. There is a book called Blind to Betrayal that explores this concept in detail.
I was often trapped in this state because I had been so angry for so long and hungry for connection that when people from my past, including relatives reached out to me I would talk to them in a dialogue rather than reacting with anger right away. I would try to negotiate our conversations without direct confrontation sometime. Particularly when the timing coincided with an emotional crucible for me, like Father’s Day to name one.
Back to my emotional mooring. Before all this started I had not been interested in women less than 40 really. I think I went on a date with a couple of women in their 30’s but that was rare. There was an implicit emotional maturity that I associated with women who either had children or had been old enough to have gone through some shit. I realize that the parts can fit even if there is a big age gap, but a durable emotional bond seems hard to maintain for me at least. Or that’s how I felt long into this process.
After all I have been through this past 24 months I am wondering why movies with Emily Blunt keep becoming relevant to my life. I wrote a piece about my connection to Oppenheimer and her performance and can’t help but think another one of her movies applies to my present circumstances. Sicario in particular and the most relevant scene, the ending with Benicio Del Toro confronting her in her apartment. He is forcing her to sign a document about the operation they had just participated in and she is refusing to do it with the barrel of a gun pointed at her head. She relents finally and Benicio’s character tells her to return to a place where the laws of man apply. This seems to be my life right now. Somewhat a desire to return to a place where the laws of man apply.
Love Jones and The Accountant or “Coffee is for Closers”
Love Jones is one of my favorite movies. It stars Larentz Tate and Nia Long and is a classic love story from the ‘90’s. It follows the beginning and journey of a couple and their friends as they embark on a challenging romance. I love it for the performances as well as the writing.
There is a scene in the movie where everyone is at a house party around the coffee table in the living room on the couches and chairs telling jokes and stories. One of them tells a story about how God must be a woman. Because who, but a woman, would create a man with such huge vulnerabilities. Get him excited about a romantic interest and all of the blood rushes from his brain to his member making him stupid. And again, the blood rushes from his feet to his member rendering him incapable of running away. Who but a woman would design a man this way?
It’s a hilarious spoof of men and women and is particularly relevant to my description of how an erotomania works. You get fixated on women in the public sphere and sexually excited by them as well. You feel it in your balls and your member. It’s intense. I detail it in my book, and have gone through a version of it in the past year as well. It’s the hyper intense version of the man designed by the female deity.
Which brings me to another favorite movie of mine, The Accountant. It is about an Accountant who works for very dangerous clients and has a high functioning form of Autism. I don’t know if I have a high functioning version of autism or not but I have always been different my whole life. I have attributed this to my challenging upbringing and the beginning of schizophrenia in my early adulthood. This process and how it has been run are something that has enhanced vulnerabilities I have with emotions and empathy. And patience. And Control. I once consulted with an expert on Autism and she ruled it out, but not with a comprehensive cognitive exam. So I don’t know if it was as thorough as I would have liked. At the end of the day I just wanted coping strategies for how I process information and interact with the world emotionally and with communication.
I am really good with numbers and I can visualize almost anything when I am not exhausted. And draw connections to images and symbols and narratives. It can weird people out and make them think that I am some kind of alien. I love the movie because the main character seems super human with frailties. I don’t know if that applies to me or not. At times I feel super human, and I know I have frailties. And how to communicate with women has been a challenge in this process. I once saw the cover of a book on WW2 and quickly came to the conclusion that it must be about crises of conscience that occur in people who are in the rooms where the decisions were made. I felt I was excluded from these rooms for so long that I grabbed Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man as an alternative to the proposed book.
I recently reread that copy and can’t tell you what a titanic masterpiece it is. And so applicable to the Black American experience today even as it was in the 50’s when it was published. I am really fair skinned but identify as African American so I am in ways Invisible to both White and Black Americans. Unable to see the real me. Just the trappings that make up my physical appearance. Not my intellectual identity.
As this process comes to a conclusion I think about one of the best scenes in movies, from Glengarry Glen Ross. Alec Guinness gives a masterful performance and his signature line in the scene is “Coffee is for Closers”. He is giving a speech to salesmen and letting them know that nothing matters, you don’t get shit unless you close the deal, not even a cup of coffee. This feels particularly relevant to my present circumstances. And if you ever go through something like this hopefully the laws of man work in your favor when confronted with this challenge. And it provides you with a Visibility that makes your intellectual identity as well as your physical appearance available to even those that have a Betrayal that makes them focus on your physical trappings rather than the substance of your intellectual identity.
Sicario, Love Jones, El Contador, Glengarry Glen Ross y El Hombre Invisible
A veces intentaban ayudarme.
Volviendo a mi amarre emocional.
No puedo ver mi verdadero yo. No mi identidad intelectual.
